The Appeal (Need of Shelters)
The people of NWA were displaced since June 2014 as a result of sectarian violence and military operations. Their houses, markets, communal hujras and mosques are either destroyed / damaged due to fighting or natural disasters. It is very notable observations that the damages are mostly occurred to kacha buildings made of round stones and constructed on raised platform especially on mountains, hills and non solid areas. Paka buildings made of cement, concrete and bricks are slightly cracked & observed somewhere fully damaged. It is estimated that in affected areas almost Kacha buildings are either fully destroyed or partially affected. A home once affected or considerably cracked is still not suitable for use. It has been brought to notice that out of total damages; almost 75% kacha houses are damaged. So it provides that maximum of affected communities are poorer. The economic conditions are not better. It is seemingly evident that the affected poorer communities have lesser potential to rehabilitate and survive. The psycho social stresses to women especially are therefore dominant. Waziristan has strong values and whole community is most concerned to the respect and dignity of women. Since most of kacha latrines are perished so it is a piercing matter of concern for women especially. Doctors in medical camps shared that digestive/gastro problem is significant which is particular in response to psycho stress occurred due to current situations. Almost 70% women of houses damaged are facing the psycho social stresses and consequently different gastro diseases and depression cases are prevailing.
The government of Pakistan is actively involved in extending support to affected areas. However, the support so far provided is highly negligible and the damages incurred are gigantic in comparison. Coordination is found poor among the public and private sectors. The most and highly glaring demand of affected communities is the provision of shelter because the communities are exposed to open atmosphere. It is also observed that people whatever they are having as financial reservoir are proactively investing on reconstruction of homes because the situation of affected communities due to off and on raining and the severity of weather is highly deplorable. So many amongst have started reconstructing minimum shelter for immediate transfer of the families.
