Hi everyone, my name is Karen Lim and this is my BIRTHDAY PLEDGE.

As some of you might have known, I've been volunteering at a Refugee School in Puncak Jalil for about 6 months now and have also been sharing stories and updates of my tutoring sessions with the kids from the school on FB. As today (7th November) marks my 28th birthday, I would like to make it memorable by asking you to contribute in support of my cause, which is 'To Empower and Ensure Continuous Education Opportunity for Refugee Children in Malaysia'. I'm (shamelessly) asking for you to give me a gift by contributing for the sustenance of the children at GGM Refugee School, Puncak Jalil.  All donations collected will be channeled directly to the school.

This page will be open till 30th November 2015. Thank you in advance for making a difference, and for making my 2015 Birthday memorable.

About GGM

This is a refugee school in Serdang, run by the Glory Gospel Community Center. It was started by a Christian Missionary named Pastor Lee. For now, there are about 30 kids ranging from 5 to 16 year-old, who come from war-torn countries like Syria, Myanmar, Iraq, Yemen and other stateless children.

Because of their refugee status, these children are not accepted into ordinary schools in Malaysia. And they are not financially capable to get a private education. So these kids get no education apart from what's taught in this refugee school solely relying on walk in volunteers as they don’t have money to pay for full time teachers. When we first found them,  this school typically in low cost areas was has no water or electricity.  Kids use the washroom of the Nasi Kandar shop right below the school flat, even to wash hands during break time. Most of the newcomers do not speak or understand English. They don't have enough exercise books or stationary and some even come empty handed to school.

These kids write on the ground because there are no desks. There are enough plastic chairs stacked up in a corner but they are useless without desks.  The school doesn't get any attention from the community because no one knows of its existence. There is no one to inform the community about it and no one to run donation campaigns. So we did what we can from whatever resources available, there is hardly enough to provide for all 30 children. These kids definitely deserve something better than this. A small help from you can change their entire future .

How you can help

-  By donating school supplies. The kids need exercise books, pencils, erasers, workbooks, shoes, stationary and school supplies of any sort.

-  By volunteering to teach. If your schedule is free on any weekday, you can offer to teach any single subject for the primary/ secondary class. The school hours are from 11.00 am to 3.00 pm. Subjects you can teach range from Math, Science, English. Saturday tutoring from 2 pm to 4 pm.

-  By running donation drives in your club/ society, classroom, or educational department to financially fund the school.
